Repair ships

During World War Two 2,751 Liberty ships were mainly used as cargo ships to replace the ones sunk by German submarines. Quite a few of them were made into floating repair shops with lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and such. In 1974 I went to work for Zidell Explorations in Portland, Oregon. Zidell had won the bid on several of these old Liberty/repair ships to salvage. My job involved cataloging and selling the machine tools removed from the ships prior to the scraping of the rest of the ship. So, I guess it all came full circle. Dad helped build them, I was involved in their recycling. Ron
