Before we left home, I searched online and found a big public library called the Harold Washington Library that was walking distance from our hotel. It had ten floors. Nine of them were open to the public. Ginger and I decided to take a walk and go explore this huge library in Chicago.
There were several security guards on most of the floors of the library. It was the first time we had gone to a library and been surrounded by security guards. When we were leaving the library after exploring all the floors, our purses were searched for books. We didn't know we had to be searched to leave the building, so we passed by the guard station in ignorance. We were called back and were required to open up our purses to be inspected.
We rode an escalator up to each floor. We took pictures on the second floor which was the children's floor of the library. We also took pictures on the ninth floor. The ninth floor didn't have any books. It was called the "winter garden". It had a huge meeting area. On the hallway walls were some interesting paintings. Ginger is standing by one of them. The roof of the ninth floor was glass and there were a lot of plants and trees on that floor. It was pretty and very peaceful up there. I didn't see any guards on that floor.
We enjoyed our visit to the library, but it was too big for us.
After we left the library, we stopped at a Barnes and Noble book store and Ginger bought a book.
When we got back to the hotel, we were hungry. The desk clerk suggested we walk to a nearby seafood restaurant. It was expensive, but the food and the service were great.
We enjoyed spending the afternoon and evening in Chicago on August 20th.
